Build a Winter Capsule Wardrobe

This blog post was originally published on JoJo Maman Bebe on 8 Sept. 2023.

Before the nights draw in and the temperature drops, it’s time to look in your little one’s wardrobe to see if they have the appropriate clothes. Do they have a warm, protective raincoat? How about a hat, scarf and gloves to keep their heads and hands toasty? And don’t forget the wellies for jumping in muddy puddles.

It’s always a good idea to plan ahead for a big season change. Temperatures drop drastically, new layers are needed and with the cost of living still lingering, it’s time to shop smart. With our mindful tips to navigate a colder climate, we’ll help you find all your essentials by building a capsule wardrobe – instead of buying dozens of clothes, start by getting intentional, practical pieces that can be repeatedly worn in multiple ways, saving you money and space. After all, we know how quickly they can grow.

Finally, if you get to know the “you plus one” method to help with layering along with our handy tog guide, you’ll stay cosy and warm and may even save on some of those heating bills…

Winter Is Coming: Wardrobe Essentials

Save with our 3-for-2 collections

Children wear a lot of clothes on a weekly basis. Not only this, but they grow insanely quickly. So whether you’re packing backup clothing for any emergencies, dressing multiple children or simply want to save a few pennies, take advantage of our multibuys with our 3-for-2 collection.

JoJo has a variety of mix-and-match clothes on hundreds of winter items so you can buy more for less. Ranging from top and leggings sets as well as two-pack items and three-pack items, it’s the best way to secure everyday basics. For many items, when you buy two or more, you can save money and have spare pairs ready to go for every day of the week.

Get a good coat

We all love the British weather. Sunshine and thunderstorms come around on the same day. When winter approaches, children will need to wear a waterproof coat that will keep them dry and warm.

JoJo jackets are made with durable, breathable materials that offer protection from all the elements. They come with press studs too so if your child needs to put their coat on at school or by themselves, they can do it without assistance.

We’ve got a range of different styles to accommodate your needs, including all-in-ones and pramsuits for babies, to parka coats and waterproof dungarees. Shop smart by buying our 4-in-1 Waterproof Polarfleece Jacket, designed to be worn in different ways so your kids will be ready for every season at a moment’s notice. Rainy days can be fun after all.

Feel secure in a sleeping bag

It’s important for kids to stay warm while they’re sleeping. If they’re too hot or cold, it may lead to a poor night’s sleep. So, like Goldilocks, the kids need to feel just right.

Make sure you’re ready for bedtime with little ones by buying sleepwear and sleeping bags at the right tog. If the room temperature is between 16 to 18 degrees, we recommend a 2.5 tog bag with two layers: a long-sleeved cotton bodysuit, and cotton sleepsuit OR pyjamas. If the room temperature is under 16 degrees, we recommend a 3.5 tog bag with two layers: a long-sleeved cotton bodysuit, and cotton sleepsuit OR pyjamas. Check out our sleeping bag and sleep guide for more information.

The right togs will also mean you don’t have to turn the heating on – everyone rests easily and your heating bills will be lower. A double win!

Remember the “you plus one” rule

As adults, we can suss out a weather-appropriate outfit by looking at the weather forecast. But looking outside at the weather isn’t a surefire way to make sure kids are dressed well.

Enter the “you plus one” rule for the colder months. The simple trick is to dress your child in as many layers as you’re wearing AND an additional layer for warmth. So if you’re going outside in a top, trousers, jumper, and coat, your little one would need all three of these AND an extra layer – maybe a vest underneath the top or a hat.

With all these layers, children can take off clothes when they get too hot, and you can be assured that they’re dressed smart too. It’s also important to make sure your kids aren’t wearing too many layers so they don’t overheat – the “you plus one” rule always seems to work like magic.

Learn to be a layering pro

By layering effectively, your kid’s clothes will keep the cold out and regulate their body temperature. For the coldest days when the temperature drops below five degrees, they’ll need three layers.
Check out our boys’ coats and jackets and girls’ coats and jackets.

1: The inner layer closest to the skin: this should be a thermal layer that’s designed to lock in body heat and keep you warm.
2: The middle layer: this is typically a fleece or puffer jacket to maintain a warm body temperature.
3: The outer layer: this is typically to keep the weather out and leave you feeling dry. This is typically a waterproof or parka coat.
